Putting Our BREAST Foot Forward

The Lail Girls' Breast Cancer 3-Day Site

It all started with Opening Ceremonies in Coachman Park, Clearwater. We walked along the lush Pinellas Trail, then rested under the trees of Taylor Park at pit stop 1. After passing a cheering station in Seminole and a huge billboard that read "You Go Girls", we had lunch with the "Lunch Ladies" in Blossom Lake Park before ending the 23-mile day in Bartlett Park. The 3-Day participants surely showed what they are made of during the 2-hour rain storm in the middle of the night.

Day Two started off on the Tampa Bay - and we were forever on the lookout for Coco the pink monkey. We enjoyed a quick grab & go at the Dali Museum, then walked by the boats of Snell Isle. We were cheered on by local Girl Scouts, and the Cheerleaders from Tampa Bay Catholic High School as we walked through old Northeast St. Petersburg. At pit stop 4, we felt the love of Friendship TrailBridge. Twenty miles of walking ended at Camp 2 at Anderson Elementary School. Somehow, walkers still found the energy to rock to the tunes of Disco Inferno.

On Day Three, we checked out the equestrian riders and horses while celebrating an Unbirthday at pit stop 2. We took in the gorgeous homes and water along Bayshore Blvd before lunch among the boats at the Tampa Convention Center. As the journey wound down, we explored the Al Lopez Cancer Survivors' Plaza while at the holding area. Finally, after 17 miles we ended our journey in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, greeted by friends, family and the entire 3-Day community.

The 2005 walk was very challenging, which we expected. We had lots of rain the first day, but a sunny afternoon. Actually, the rain made the walking easier since the temperatures stayed in the high 80s and low 90s. Saturday, we both ended the day with injuries; I had blisters under my big toe nails, and Melissa pulled a ligament in her foot and succumbed to heat rash [what they call "road rash"] on her legs. Although our muscles were sore, we were blessed to not have something worse, since heat exhaustion sent several walkers homes with IVs.

We finished the walk Sunday by 3pm; Sunday was the shortest day [Friday: 23 miles, Saturday: 20 miles, & Sunday: only 17miles] -- on purpose I'm sure! It was truly an experience we can't completely describe. The Tampa walk raised over

$5 million dollars 

for breast cancer. We are both so proud to be a part of that!
